Artists wanted for Zeitgeist events

It's an interesting invitation for artists: Zeitgeist Gallery will provide the materials, and you provide the talent.

The Fifth Annual Visual Jam Sessions at the Zeitgeist Gallery will celebrate collaborative efforts to produce works in different media: painting, sculpture, mosaics and "whatever other mediums we can get our hands on," planners say.

All the works created will be used in fund-raising for Zeitgeist. Added incentive for artists: free beer, wine and food!

You can register or just show up at the events, which start Friday and run through July 28.

For a complete schedule, call 313-965-9192 or go to www.zeitgeistdetroit.org.

EBay selling bit of 'Prada'

The fashion pack will be heading to cinemas Friday to catch "The Devil Wears Prada," the film based on the best-selling novel about the glamorous and not-so-glamorous aspects of working in the fashion-magazine business.

Naturally, clothes are a huge part of the film, which is probably the first movie title to so prominently feature a designer name.

EBay will put 73 items -- clothing, accessories and shoes -- on the block so fashionistas can own a piece of "The Devil Wears Prada."

Only one actual Prada dress, a black cocktail number with cap sleeves worn by Hathaway on-screen, is among the eBay offerings.

"The Devil Wears Prada" duds will be sold in two blocks, with half up for grabs through Saturday at www.eBay.com and a second cache going up for bid Friday through July 6.

Dress for Success will get 50% of the proceeds from the sale. The nonprofit organization is known for providing business attire to low-income women for jobs and interviews.

Lack of money can affect sex life, survey says

Courtesy of Women's Health magazine: Lack of cash may harm your relationship.

According to a recent British survey, one in five people say that financial problems have affected their sex life, and half the people surveyed say they fight more with their partner when they are stressed about money.

Jay Leno: “And according to a poll in ‘Health’ magazine…more Americans said they'd rather have Bill Clinton as their father than President Bush. Well, sure. With Clinton you'd get away with a lot more, don't you think? ‘Look, I won't mention you coming home late if you don't mention me coming home late.’”

Jay Leno: “And another Bush team member stepping down, this time his long-term speech writer, guy named Michael Gerson. He was President Bush's speechwriter for seven years. Isn't that amazing? President Bush had a speechwriter.”

Jay Leno: “Al Gore getting more vocal lately. You heard his latest? He spoke out today about the US air strike. You know, we used those two 500-pound bombs to kill that al Zarqawi guy. Well, Gore said they could have done the same job with one hybrid mini-bomb that runs on vegetable oil.”

Jay Leno: “The Supreme Court has ruled that with a warrant police no longer have to knock before kicking your door in. Unless of course you're Vice President of the United States, and they want to talk to you about shooting a guy in the face. Then they'll come back tomorrow.”

David Letterman: “About a week ago, they bombed al-Zarqawi, and now they're sifting through the remains of the house where he was bombed and they're finding unbelievable things. Earlier today, for example, they uncovered the body of Jimmy Hoffa.”

by Colleen Palati

If you have ever had an anxiety attack or suspect that you may suffer from a general anxiety disorder, this information will be quite helpful to you. 30 million Americans have been diagnosed with general anxiety disorders, including panic disorders, phobias and post-traumatic stress disorders. Another 35 million people with anxiety suffer mild to moderate symptoms.

On average, 70% of all people with a general anxiety disorder will consult with more than 10 physicians before the cause of their symptoms is accurately diagnosed. A recent study at Harvard Medical School reported that patients who cope poorly with stress become ill four times more often than those with good coping skills.

If you are not sure if you suffer from a general anxiety disorder, the following is a list of the most frequent signs of anxiety. They are: trembling, rapid heartbeat, lump in throat, frozen smile, neckaches, indigestion, insomnia, overeating, preoccupation with illness, fear of embarrassment or rejection, and fear of being ugly or fat.

Have you ever experienced any of these? If so, don't worry. We all go through stress at some point in our lives. As long as you don't have these feelings on a daily or weekly basis, you are probably fine. If you do experience a good portion of these signs of anxiety, read through the list below for strategies to developing inner peace.

Movement- Physical activity helps to reduce stress and anxiety. Walking is especially good for anxiety. Try not to push yourself to the point where it's unpleasant…if you are straining or pushing yourself to hard, it will not be as beneficial in reducing anxiety.

Relax- Scientific studies have demonstrated that when viewing natural landscapes (sky, trees, greenery, water or flowers) people tend to feel more relaxed and less anxious. Remember, you deserve to enjoy your life and there is no reason to feel guilty about relaxing!

Eat right- It is important to eat a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables and whole grains. Balancing the diet helps to balance the levels of neurotransmitters involved in keeping stress and depression in check.

Take charge- A major cause of anxiety is the feeling of a lack of control. Helplessness is a huge component in depression and anxiety. It is a good idea to ask yourself questions like, "Why am I doing this?" or "Do I have to do this?" or "Will the world end if I don't?" Most importantly, don't be afraid to say "no" if you don't feel comfortable doing something.

Take inventory on what causes you anxiety. Take the anxiety test I found in natural health magazine below.

0= no anxiety
1= mild anxiety
2= moderate anxiety
3= severe anxiety

____ confronting a loved one about a problem

____ making a major purchase or investment

____ making a mistake, failing

____ being seen naked or in a bathing suit

____ sexual preference

____ keeping things neat and orderly

____ heavy commuter traffic

____ deadlines, evaluations or tests

____ financial obligations, unpaid bills

____ feeling stared at

____ going to a public restroom

____ being criticized

____ talking to people in authority

____ the sight of blood

____ specializing at a party

____ giving or receiving a gift

____ making cold calls at work

____ being on time for appointments or events

____ packing for a trip

____ waiting in line

____ being in enclosed places

____ eating along in a restaurant

____ speaking to a group

____ taking a business call

____ the thought of death

____ being in a crowd

____ entering the elevator

____ going in an airplane

____ driving a car

____ going to a doctor or dentist

____ going to sleep or waking up

____ coming home to an empty house

____ rejection in love or at work

Add your score up. Which category do you fall in?

0-19: you have no to mild anxiety.

20-39: mild to moderate anxiety

40-59: moderate anxiety

60 and over: a possible anxiety disorder

If indeed you suspect that you suffer from a general anxiety disorder, please consult your physician. You can also try taking Kava or Siberian Ginseng supplements to help relax you. I also recommend reading "Psycho-Cybernetics" by Walter Maltz. This incredibly life-changing book discusses the power our mind has on our self-image and happiness.

Anxiety and stress are very real components in our lives. It is amazing how much they wear on our body, not to mention our mental health. If you do experience high levels of stress or general anxiety, get it under control as soon as possible. See your physician and begin to take inventory of your life. You are important, so take care of yourself!

by Sam Stevens

Esoteric vibrational remedies are really hot right now, especally in Hollywood -- the next step beyond aromatherapy. I Natural Health magazine says that even Julia Roberts is spraying herself with a Petaltone product to "clear her aura." of ancient negative ties and resentments(Jason Patric and Kiefer Sutherland by any chance?) Even Julia Roberts knows that essences is one of the few ways she can protect herself from all of the transference, projection and other negative thought forms hurled at her etheric force field every day."

If you still think this is a lot of nonsense, it is -- only try spelling it non -scents. Vibrational remedies, contain the plant essence but not its smell. All you're bound to smell like is grain alcohol or organic brandy. The idea is that the plant essence itself, either ingested or applied to the body, acts within the subtle body of the aura to correct or balance negative thought forms and energy.

The idea was pioneered in the 1920s by Edward Bach, a trance channeller who went out in the wilderness and ate 38 different wild-flowers. He then noted which plant caused which miserable psychological state. True to the homeopathic principle of "like repels like", each flower than became a remedy for such complex states as "failing to learn from past experiences" and "for struggling on ceaselessly despite hardships and great odds, never giving up when overwhelmed."

Eighty years later, Bach's original idea has exploded to include lines of esoteric remedies made from everything from tropical plants, famous roses, shells, ice, moonbeams, plants and gemstones. Being somewhat of a spiritual thrill seeker, who is always looking for ways to alter her consciousness without getting a hangover, my hobby lately is surfing the internet and looking for the most exotic esoteric remedies that I can find...(I know, I should get a life!)

When I go shopping for essences, I look for something like Ancient Forest Flower Essences' Norwegian Fjord Waterfall -- a remedy made in the clear waters of a towering fjord waterfall -- and rumoured to fill one with empowerment. I want to "connect with my higher self" by sipping Healing Antartic Pack Ice which was made on Half Moon Island in the Antartic Penisinsula during an afternoon of rare sunshine. Why have a beer when you can have a glass of water with a couple of drops of Southern Ocean Seaspray in it --"made with Antartic waters during a stormy evening in the Great Southern Ocean at latitude 5905.8 which willl help me to "learn to let go" at the same time.

As I was cruising through sites on the internet devoted to this fascinating subject, it occured me that one could make a vibrational essence out of just about anything. It's not like you need a degree to conduct these special vibrations. Anybody can do it. In fact, I was thinking of creating my own line of vibrational essences for the esoteric connoisour. How about "Sexual Realization" -- an essence made in the back seat of a 1972 Ford Chrysler under a full moon on Halloween while chewing pink bubblegum and losing one's virginity at a Drive In. Or "Patience of A Saint" -- an essence I personally channelled while standing in line at the Toronto Dominion Bank under flourescent lights while having to pee while trying to cash a cheque during a heat-wave day in Toronto in 1986 or "Complete Fulfillment" -- an essence I made well dancing completely nude in the rain around a huge bonfire during a thunderstorm while being made love to by two men and women and eating lasagna at the same time during the last harmonic convergence?"

Years ago, I came up with the idea for an esoteric spray called "Babe Away" --- an aersol that would contain a concentration of energy that would repel unwanted attentions away. Sadly, once again, I was ahead of my time. Petaltone, a company out of Britain has made a product called Aura Blue, that does exactly that; it helps one with the process of "tie-cutting" obnoxious energies that may have hooked into your aura. Of course, what these companies are really selling is just water -- but it really holy water? Only the holes in my aura know for sure.

by Dr.Shashikant Patwardhan

Being one of the panchamahabhoota, agni (fire) has the characteristic that it cannot exist without a base. In the body it exists in pitta dosha.

Agni is responsible for the following functions:

Digestion - indigestion (Pakti- Apakti)

Vision- absence of vision (Darshanam- Adarshanam)

Degree of heat (Matra- Amatratvamushmanala)

Normal -abnormal complexion (Prakrit - Vikarit varnam)

Prowess- fear (Shaurya- Bhaya)

Anger - exholoration (krodham- Harsham)

Confusion- clarity of mind (Moha- Prasadan)

For the metabolic processes in the body, there are three main groups of biological factors, probably exhibiting enzymatic functions (agnis).

Jatharagni or Koshthagni:

Present in the pachak pitta. It is responsible for the digestion and the absorption of nutritious substances during this process.

The process of digestion (ahar pachan) is divided in three stages, which collectively is called awastha paka and can be divided in the following.

Amavstha (Madhuravastha) Paka - in stomach

Pachymanavastha (Amlavstha) Paka - in 'grahani' (Duodenum)

Pakavstha (Katuavstha) Paka - in small and large intestine

As the rasa changes in different phase of digestion these phase of digestion are called avsthapaka. At the end of the digestion the digested food have their original rasa which is in accordance with the rasa of the ingested food. This is called as Nistha paka .It is also called popularly as Vipaka.

Madhur rasa & Lavan rasa have Madhura Vipaka, Amla rasa have amla vipaka and Katu, Tikta & Kashaya rasa have Katu vipaka.

Panchabhutagnis :

In ayurveda it is believed that everything is made up of five elements and so is the body. These five elements are the panchmahabhoota and are responsible for constituting every living being in the world. Agni transforms the Asharir Mahabhoota (external mahabhoot) to Sharir Mahabhoota. Example - When we drink water Jala Mahabhoota (water) dominates and later the water is transformed by Jala Mahabhoota agni to the Sharir Jala Containing five types of biological factors, it is responsible for the processing of the five basic elements into a composition useful to the body.

Dhatvagnis : The third group contains seven types, each for the assimilation of the seven tissues This assimilation takes place successively. From the absorbed nutritious substance, plasma (rasa) is produced first; from plasma, blood (rakta) is formed, then muscular tissue (mamsa), adipose tissue (meda), bony tissue (asthi), bone marrow (majjan) and the reproductive cells (shukra).

Besides performing all the metabolic functions agni takes care of digestion (ahar pachan) and in the absence of ahar it acts on the ama pachan i.e. properly metabolize the improper metabolites. When ahar and ama are absence Agni does the function of dhatu i.e. rasa, rakta etc. Digestion of dhatu is a fatal condition in which dhatus are broken down to get energy. The reduction or deficiency of the quantum of dhatu in the human body leads to the disease called 'Kshaya roga'.

In ayurveda it is believed that all the pathology occurs due to the impairment in Agni (Kaya). Hence the correction of Kaya i.e. Agni is called the treatment or 'Kaya Chikitsa' in ayurveda

Agnis are also classified into four categories according to how they manifest in the human being:

Tikshnagni -sharp,

Mandagni - mild,

Vishamagni - irregular, and

Samagni - regular or Balanced.

This article may come as a surprise to you, especially if you follow a healthy and nutritious diet...

It's about pizza, the weakness of many people including me. I love pizza- always have. I make sure I eat it in moderation, but it's still one of my favorite foods.

Now there's good news for pizza lovers.

According to Men's Health magazine, research concludes that pizza can be good for you. It's important to point out, however, that we're talking about real pizza- not the kind you get from Pizza Hut, Dominoes or the frozen food section of your supermarket. By real, I mean pizza made with real crust, real tomato sauce and pure olive oil.

According to Men's Health, scientists writing in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that eating pizza can reduce your risk of a heart attack. In a 4-year study of nearly 1,000 Italians, those who ate pizza at least once a week were 30 percent less likely to experience a heart attack than the folks who didn't partake of the pie.

This is contributed to pizza's cardio protective ingredients, including olive oil and tomato sauce. And here's a way to make the pizza even healthier: top it with vegetables, part-skim cheese and use whole wheat crust. You'll then have a meal that is actually good for you.

Can you get this kind of a pizza in a pizzeria? You might be able to find some that offer whole wheat crust, but I doubt you'll find any that offer part-skim cheese. What you can do is buy the ingredients at your local grocery store and make the pizza yourself. Speaking from experience, this can be a fun thing!

Enjoy the experience of making your own pizza and savoring a nutritious meal. After all, feeding your body with nutritious meals is the number one thing you can do for better health.

Many of us have been asked to write an article at one time or another. Maybe it's a contribution to the company newsletter. Or a promotional article to gain publicity for ourselves or our companies. Some of us write articles regularly for clients.

No matter why you're writing an article, it's your responsibility to make it be interesting - otherwise no one will read it. (Except you.)

So how can you make your article interesting and engage your reader? It's all about the ANGLE. First pick your topic. For example, let's say your topic is something boring ... "car wax." Now, here's where many people start writing.

Stop! You need an angle! What aspect of car wax do you want to write about? Is there anything new or sexy in the world of car wax that people are interested in? Some ideas: how the new generation of car waxes helps protect your paint job for twice as long, OR, an overview of the best five brands of car wax on the market, OR what the best type of wax is for your particular car. Get it? These are all angles. (By the way, I've never even waxed my car, so please take these ideas with a grain of salt! ; ))

Ready to brainstorm your angles? Here are seven article "formulas" to get you started. Some elements of each may overlap with each other, but each formula is truly a distinct animal.

1. The How-To
People love how-to articles! They lead the reader step-by-step through how to reach an objective. They also sometimes offer resources the reader can contact for more information.

What expertise do *you* have to share? Turn that subject into an interesting how-to for readers. Examples: "How to Make Your Employees Stick Around Forever," "How to Find the Best Dress for Your Figure," and "How to Promote Your Business for Free."

2. The List
This is one of the most basic formulas and the easiest to write. Give a short one or two paragraph intro, then launch right into your list. Keep each item to a few sentences max. People love numbers, so number your list and give your total number in the title! Examples: "31 Ways to Organize Your Office," "15 Tips for Pain-Free Feet," "Five Reasons Management Won't Be the Same in 2001"

3. The "Straw Man"
Here you set up a premise and knock it down, showing the benefits of your alternative view or approach. This is ideal to use when you're discussing the drawbacks of a new practice or method that's controversial right now. Here's a great example we often see on the covers of health magazines: "Are High Protein Diets the Key to Fast Weight Loss?" You get all excited, thinking you've discovered an amazing dieting revelation. But the article reveals, point by point, that high protein diets are unsafe for the long term, and that of course the only reliable way to lose weight is through diet and exercise. Oh well! Back to the treadmill....

4. The Mini Case Study
Raise a provocative question and then answer it with three or four real-life examples. Example: For an article titled, "Should You Quit Your Job and Go Freelance?" you could begin with a few stats on how today's workforce is leaving the corporate world in search of solo bliss. Then you could feature a few real cases, each with different outcomes to show all sides of the issue.

5. The Interview
Choose a credible expert to interview for your article. For example, if your topic is the latest trends in banking, you could interview a top banking industry analyst. Present it in either a traditional article format or do a Q&A format.

6. The Trend
Trends aren't just for fashion! Whenever a trend sweeps a certain profession, you'll suddenly see dozens of articles covering the topic. From the latest hairstyle to the latest tax shelter, people want to know all about these trends - their origins, benefits, and drawbacks.

7. The Study Finding
These articles report the results of a study or survey. If you do a bit of research, you can probably dig up a recent study on which you can base your article. Examples: "Blue Chip Companies Cutting Marketing Budgets Across the Board," "Armadillos Now Deemed America's Favorite Pet," and "More 20 Somethings Finding Love Online."

Hope these ideas got your juices flowing! Let us know if you need any help developing angles for *your* articles.
